This week has seen some wild weather. On Monday a violent cold front swept through much of the UK, with mighty cumulus clouds billowing up high into the atmosphere and unleashing a narrow band of intense heavy rainfall, hail, thunder and lightning and fierce gusting winds.

In this mayhem, at about 6.30am a possible tornado struck Knutton in the suburbs of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. A caravan was flipped over, garden sheds sent flying, fences flattened and roof tiles torn off. Chris Jones, a resident, said: “The rain became torrential and the wind increased suddenly and there were loud crashing and banging noises. We looked through the window to see tiles and debris flying around. It was then that we noticed that our car had sustained substantial
