Severe Weather Awareness Week (Part 4) Tornado Safety Drill Day

Severe Weather Awareness week continues in Wright County and throughout the state.

Kevin Reed, Deputy Director of Minnesota Homeland Security Emergency Management says today’s (Thursday) focus will be on tornadoes with two statewide practice drills, the first this afternoon at 1:45, and a second drill at 6:45.

Reed says outdoor warning sirens will sound during these two practice drills. Wright County will test the outdoor warning sirens during both tornado drills, and KRWC Radio will also participate in the mock tornado watches and warnings.

According to the National Weather Service, Minnesota experiences an average of 40 tornadoes per year. The state set a record of 104 in 2010.

Safety officials remind everyone that Severe Weather Awareness Week is a time to create, update and practice emergency plans, and review where to shelter in the event of a tornado, or severe thunderstorm.

Though tornadoes in April are rare in Minnesota, you might remember that in 2017, Wright County actually had its first tornado warning of the year in early March.
