Several tornadoes appear to have touched down near Richmond on Monday.

Officials with the National Weather Service say at least five tornadoes touched down Monday in the Richmond area. Survey crews are continuing to assess damage – meaning that total could rise.

Meteorologist Jeff Orrock says two tornadoes were particularly damaging, including one that killed a man working at a flooring company in Chesterfield County.

“That one started south of Hull Street, moved north through a residential area and by the time it reached Hull Street and got to Old Dominion Flooring, the wind speeds had increased to 120 miles per hour, where we rated it an EF-2.”

Another tornado tracked through the Hampton Park area of the county. Orrock says that particular tornado was on the ground for nine miles, reaching EF-1 level winds of at least 85 miles per hour.

Yet another tornado in Mecklenburg County along the Virginia-North Carolina border has also been confirmed.
