Terrifying moment adventurers’ campsite is ripped apart by a tornado of dust in a South Pacific crater 

  • The weather turned extreme during a trip to the top of Marum Crater on the isle of Vanuatu
  • Significant damage was done to the camp but nobody was injured 

Dramatic footage has emerged of a campsite filled with adventurers being ripped apart when it was suddenly hit by a tornado. 

The weather turned extreme during an expedition to the top of the Marum Crater, Ambrym, and battered the camp.

Shocked - but not quite blown away - on the island of Vanuata were Brit Chris Horsley and photographer, Geoff Mackley, from New Zealand, who was running trip.

Mr Mackley said: 'It did quite a bit of damage in the camp, bottles were flying around and tents unpicked, but we fixed it quite quickly.

'It was fairly hard to see when it ripped through camp, due to the dust and rocks it picked up.

'Dust devils are not too common up there but on this day there were literally hundreds of them.

'This one pictured was extremely rough.'
